IDEAS TO DECORATE YOUR FIRST HOME
by Tamara Hunsaker

Add Color
Paint can add a real punch for pennies. You can paint an accent wall in vintage orange or add interest by painting the entire room yellow dahlia. For added excitement, make a diamond effect by taping diagonally in one direction and then in the opposite direction. Paint over and you will create a diamond pattern. Painting is something you can do together that will dramatically stylize your living space.
Contemporary Window Treatments
Woven blinds such as matchstick or bamboo are a contemporary option for window treatments. They can be purchased at home improvement stores. For an added look, dress up the blinds with fabric ties. Simply use fabric strips 3” to 4” wide and 54” or longer to make the bands and to tie the blinds up. Ties could match pillow fabrics for a coordinating look.
Drapes to Fit Your Windows
Having your drapes too short is a dead give away you’re a beginner when it comes to home decorating. But finding ready-made drapes long enough to go above the window and down to touch the floor isn’t always easy. So, if you find your drapes to be too short, simply add contrasting colored fabric to the top or bottom of the panel. This adds length and color and gives you the designer look.

Create Custom Art
Make your room resemble a gallery with custom art. This is a cost effective way to bring character and style to your space. Simply purchase a gallery wrapped canvas available at art stores and paint it with acrylics. This is a fun activity to do as a couple. Have a pattern or design in mind – stripes, lines or circles – and be sure to pencil your design before you start. You will not need to buy a frame using this type of canvas. Creating your masterpiece will only take minutes and will be a cherished piece of art.
